About the Series
The Joint Seminars in Molecular Biology series is a long-running UC Davis forum that brings leading scientists to campus to share advances across the molecular life sciences. Featuring distinguished speakers from academic and research institutions, the series highlights discoveries that deepen our understanding of cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying health, disease and biological function. By convening faculty, trainees and students across disciplines, the seminars foster scientific dialogue, spark new collaborations and strengthen the molecular biology community.

Masahide Kikkawa, Professor, Cell Biology and Anatomy, Graduate School of Medicine, The University of Tokyo, Japan, presents "Cryo-EM analysis of IFT-motor-cargo interaction and flagellar asymmetry".

Masahide Kikkawa is currently a Professor in the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy at the Graduate School of Medicine, The University of Tokyo, a position he has held since 2009. He also serves as the Director of the Research Center for Structural Sciences at the university since 2020.

Dr. Kikkawa received his M.D. from the University of Tokyo in 1992 and his Ph.D. from the same institution in 1997. His academic career includes serving as an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (2001-2007) and as a Specially Appointed Professor at Kyoto University (2007-2009).

His research focuses on structural biology, particularly using cryo-electron microscopy to study the cytoskeleton and motor proteins. He has been recognized with several awards, including the Kazato Prize (2009) and the Japanese Society of Microscopy Society Award (Seto Prize) in 2023. He also served as a member of the Council of Scientists for the Human Fronter Science Program (HFSP) from 2020 to 2024.
