Appolinaire Djikeng, Professor and Director General, international Livestock Research Institute (ILRI)
Appolinaire Djikeng is Director General of the International Livestock Research Institute and Senior Director for Livestock-Based Systems at CGIAR. A bioscientist specializing in genomics and its applications to agriculture, animal, human, and environmental health, Djikeng has more than two decades of research and research leadership experience across Africa, Europe, and the United States. He previously directed the Centre for Tropical Livestock Genetics and Health at the University of Edinburgh’s Roslin Institute, advancing genomic solutions to improve livestock productivity, disease resistance, and resilience in low-income countries, and led the Biosciences eastern and central Africa (BecA) initiative at ILRI, strengthening bioscience capacity across the continent. Djikeng co-founded the African Animal Breeding Network and the African BioGenome Project to harness genomics for sustainable genetic improvement and biodiversity conservation, and received the 2020 Nelson Mandela Justice Award in recognition of his international peace work.

Climate change continues to affect animal; agriculture. Building climate-smart or climate resilient livestock systems is an imperative for future resilience of animal agriculture in the global South. There is a robust case to build innovations that support small scale livestock producers in Africa and in Asia.

The Tracy and Ruth Storer Lectureship in the Life Sciences is the most prestigious of the endowed seminars at UC Davis. Established in 1960, the Storer Endowment makes it is possible to invite distinguished biological scientists to campus to present two lectures and meet with faculty members and graduate students in their field of interest. The series is presented by the UC Davis College of Biological Sciences.
